It boggles my mind how people are able to put together a feature film, with known actors no less (which implies that there is some sort of monetary budget floating around somewhere), but is not able to put together any sort of budget to pay for somebody to create and maintain the film's website and utilize all of these social media websites Blogs, Facebook, YouTube, Tumblr, My Space, Twitter. Oh yeah, and not to mention have SEO expertise. Because after all, the well-known public perception is that anybody who has web design/development skills, social media/SEO, etc is expected to work for peanuts because all of this stuff happens by magic.

I had to post this info so people like this can't hide behind the anonymity of craigslist while taking advantage of others.

Best selling author Anna Lappe can't afford a modest fee for photography that she will use for further commercial gain? What the hell is wrong with people. I find it especially discouraging that said author is in ways a social change advocate - someone who researches the root causes of hunger and poverty. I have a big tip for you: look at how you devalue others hard work for your own gain. Photo credit is great - I take it to the bank all the time and use it to pay rent and buy groceries. Oh wait, no I don't. Shame on you.

I will personally flag any and all companies seeking unpaid interns. According to the 1947 Supreme Court case of Cohen and Wolf, if a student does any work that benefits an employer (i.e. delivering mail, organizing files, making appointments, writing reports, NORMAL INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES) they must be paid at least minimum wage or the employer is in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

This act literally says the internship has to follow this guideline: "The employer that provides the training derives NO immediate advantage from the activities of the trainees and, on occasion, the employer’s operations are actually impeded." That's right, in order for an unpaid internship to be legal, the intern must not contribute to the company, but RECEIVE from the company the service of EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE at the company's own expense.

Posting on CraigsList seeking a student intern and describing in that post the various tasks that will be involved in that position, means you are in violation of the law. Any company that can't afford to support a student with 10 bucks an hour obviously isn't a respectable place.

STUDENTS, KNOW YOUR RIGHTS! You have to be paid at least minimum wage; it's the law.

Artists, Illustrators, Photogs, Graphic designers...

I'm posting this to pledge allegiance with all of you. Do not work for free - and more - avoid working for exaggerated low rates or so called internships. If you are a student, there should be more than enough resources at your school to present internship possibilities.

If you have an interest in a project that can't pay you right away - suggest to the poster that you may be interested in signing on as an equity partner. Meaning you are going into a business arrangement with them that can benefit you somewhere down the line.

If you are really itching to get some new work out there, try a collaboration with some other creative working in a complimentary form - graphics people need photographers, illustrators need zine or small press publishers, etc...

So often I see posters asking for interns, and then go on to offer a JOB description in the body of the post. Legally an internship is supposed to benefit the intern in her or his area of interest. For the business owner, this creates a highly qualified candidate for their particular business. That's the way it was done for hundred of years, and it works.

Contrary to popular belief, art, expression, and creativity are extremely important. This people that belittle your work with comments like: " if you are good with ( insert medium here ), it shouldn't take much time!" Are fucking dreamers, to be frank. If their business is legit and really going places, paying for distinctive quality work will not be a problem, trust.

Your definition is close, but the Fair Labor Standards Act actually sets up much more specific criteria for it.

The training, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to that which would be given in a vocational school;
The training is for the benefit of the trainees or students;
The trainees or students do not displace regular employees, but work under close supervision;
The employer that provides the training receives no immediate advantage from the activities of the trainees or students and, on occasion, his operations may even be impeded;
The trainees or students are not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the training period; and
The employer and the trainees or students understand that the trainees or students are not entitled to wages for the time spent in training.

So, those internships that ask the intern editor to already be a Final Cut Wizard are jerks looking for free work. So, stick up for your rights! Flag them! And if you've already worked for one of these guys, and not received any training, you CAN report them. What they are doing is ILLEGAL!

The posting below is a joke!
In New York, the intense expense for printing up large images and framing them is overwhelming.
Any photographer or artist who shells out the money for this will understand that financial hurt real quick!
It also takes a real fool, not to know that there is less than a 1% chance of anyone at a gallery showing, actually hiring a photographer for anything.
That's just not the way the industry works!
People don't look at fanciful, artistic photographs at an art showing, then turn around and hire you to do fashion, weddings, product photography or other wise.
Hoping for a chance of that is incredibly unrealistic.
Promising photographers "Industry Exposure" in exchange for the expense and effort they endure to put a showing together is simply absurd.
The only individual(s) to benefit from such a crack-pot situation is the "venue".
If you're a young photographer starting out, do yourself a favor and ignore this idiotic type of posting!

Does a total stranger want you to wire them the "extra" money via Western Union or Money Gram?

Does the language, word choices, or poor grammar in received emails seem off?

Joe Ciminera - Taste This Production Scam?
A while back we featured a business called Taste This Production, Inc. The owner Joe Ciminera claims to be in the reality cooking show business, and wants to make you a star. The problem is that once you respond and fly to New York (on your own dime) you get to shoot in a garage, and get charged an absurd amount of money. Here is another email we received:

On 1/8/09 a CL user wrote:

My boyfirend is looking in to a cooking show in New York. The company is called Taste This TV its on 2005 Merrick Road. Anyway they sent him a e-mail stating- "Taste This Production, Inc will produce a 26:00 minute pilot. The initial pilot will take approximately 5 hours to film. The show(s) will be shot on Sony Z1U cameras. The onset crew will consist of: Executive producer, Producer, Make-up artist, food stylist, sound and camera operator(s) and 2 film technicians. The show will be delivered, fully edited in no later than two weeks after the filming date. Upon approval of the pilot, the distribution company for cable will distribute the show for potential sale and deliver to cable broadcasters across the U.S. (name) will own all the rights to the pilot." Now the FUNNY part is this - "Cost: Your cost for the production of the pilot is $7,500. This cost is presented to you so that you will commit to the project 100%. "

I presented the proposal to my Entertainment Lawyer, who informed me that i needed to respectfully decline. Not a complete Scam, but paying that kind of money for no guaranteed air time, is unacceptable.

Architectural/ real estate illustration usually cost $2000,$3000 per illustration (or even higher). And each illustration will take days to be perfectly finished.

If your client is a very wealthy/high-end person and you want to put those illustration in the brochures, that's what you should pay the illustrator!!!!

Architectural illustrator is very complicated because you can't just ask the illustrator to draw the imagination. Your client will look at that illustration and ask you to complete the exact same thing. Can you afford to upset your so-called very wealthy client?

$800 for 8 illustrations means $100/ illustration. If you need someone to do crappy jobs and few scratchy pencil sketch ( oh, and black and white), then here you go!!

Very foolish. Take it from me, a successful freelance artist... when you work for no pay, your client doesn't respect you or your work.

As far as making a connection... if you connect with cheap people, you will be working a long time for cheap people.

As far as working for "experience" when I was starting out, I took ads that I didn't like and redesigned them. Even did new headlines. Then I showed the "before" and my after. I got hired with my portfolio showing major accounts the way I would do them and it worked.

Try that for experience.

In all honesty, I can understand photographers getting offended by being asked to provide their equipment and skill just for the pleasure of having a photo published in UNVOGUE (?!?). It's a real problem that people put "no pay" in a place where people are looking to find paying work, especially in such an expensive enterprise as photography. It shouldn't even be an option, frankly.

To the UNVOGUE people: You get what you pay for. If you are willing to pay nothing, you probably should understand that you're not going to get a level of quality that you want representing your magazine. I am pretty sure folks would agree that if a magazine had a poor quality photograph on its cover, they're not as likely to take it seriously, and even less likely to purchase the magazine. Hey hey, now guys, c'mon. There is no need to whine about non paying mag gigs. Us pro photographers all know that magazines think we all become superstars after getting published for credit only...when in fact I don't even know half the people who shot for the REAL Vogue 10 years ago.

Don't shoot for mags who don't pay at all. It's bad enough that some only pay $150/shoot. I've never shot for a mag and nevertheless make decent living. With patience and hard work you can do the same.

I agree... to all of you so called employers, don't use the economy as an excuse to belittle our work. Please not that graphic design is considered the most mentally intensive work field besides that of the doctorate field because of our need to understand a certain psychology in order to deliver effective ideas. We bring forth years of training, experience, and techniques that are both invaluable and utilize knowledge of culture, emotion, and application.

If you want to barter for service... start your own country, and trade a horse, for a few gallons of milk and egg laying hens...

Graphics Designers, Web Designers, Photoshop experts, Motion Graphic Designers, and everyone else do not want credit in your worthless film, and we don't care about your precious experience. We want money, just like everyone else.

Creative jobs isn't just a fancy term for freebies. We are providing a service that no one else can provide. It's called 'creative' for a reason. Sure you could hire some random guy to whip up a flier for you, but we are specially trained to know what sells. We know how customers and consumers react to design. We study it for years and know that a good flier or website could be the difference between keeping your company in business or not.

Just because you don't think it takes a lot of skill or talent to design something doesn't mean that we aren't using years and years of experience and skill to put together something looks professional. Any self respecting expert in doing the one program that graphic designers hate working in will get at least $50/hour, and that's on the LOW end. Average price is $65/hour. If I were desperate for work, I would take $40/hour or $30/hour. $10/hour is an insult.

That roughly translates to $5 - $3.33 an hour. Even the fastest and most skilled illustrators would only make $10 an hour, and you're not gonna get replies from them at that rate.

Fledgling magazine in fantasy genre needs pictures of mythical creatures and children in adventurous, fantasy situations. Currently we need black and white, line drawings. We want classic looking images. As a point of reference, we like to original illustrations in the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland, as well as the work of Brian Froud and Maurice Sendak. 1) Do not let these people take advantage of you, offering work for your portfolio in exchange for no compensation.

2) These people are not reputable and your services are not free, unless of course you are invested in the cause (ie: non-profit, charity, social cause, etc). Otherwise they are more than capable of paying you for your services. You will more than likely not get great work for your portfolio because they are going to dictate what you execute, and if they aren’t willing to pay then their visual integrity is worthless. The only other time it is appropriate to offer free services is in rare circumstances where you are doing an unpaid internship, but you should be compensated in college credits in return for your slaving away and at the very least you should receive a stipend.

3) The type of people that offer these “fun, exciting opportunities” are the same people who host “design competitions” where they will take anything they like and have it reproduced and you will never see any of the money. You don’t go to several hair stylists and say, “let me see what you can do and if I like it I’ll pay you.”

Please take this advice from a design professor who is trying to educate all students on the perils of these worthless hacks. Don’t let these people screw you over and maybe even send them a message about how unethical they are for fun. Consider it a class assignment.

Based on the limited info, let’s assume you’re looking for the standard stuff… perhaps 15-20 pages of artwork in the style Marvel or DC. And, let’s say that any decent artist will spend at least one day per page. According to your offer, that artist would be getting paid $10 a day, or $1.25 per hour. Meanwhile, minimum wage in the state of NY is $7.15 per hour.

Or better yet, let’s not make assumptions about how fast an artist can work. Who knows, maybe he or she is a prodigy and can turn out 10 solid pages a day. So based on your offer, they’d get paid ~$10 per page. Now, here are the industry standard page rates, straight out of the handbook:

Pencils: $100-$250 per page

Inks: $75-$200 per page

Coloring: $100-$150 per page

Lettering: $40-$50 per page

or, fully painted art: $300-$400 per page

Errrr... purchasing the copyright to a photographer’s work would normally cost thousands of dollars.

And ‘post production’ work is all a vital and necessary part of the photography process - a camera can very rarely give you a 100% perfect image otherwise you would have no need for a photographer. Why would I want to have credit given on an image that you fools have manipulated to look ridiculous?

So how about you stop posting such a cheap and greedy ads and just go out and buy a point and shoot camera and take the shots yourself.

now could it be this: His current programmer was promiced payed work, so he built these guys a website. Now they want to update it, but the programmer says: “wheres the payed work you promiced me?? im not updating your site and im not giving you the source files”... so they decide to find another sucker, only this time they want to be able to update the site themselves.

R u kidding? “Volunteer” or “limited funds” for consultant....for someone to run virtually EVERY aspect of your tech needs, from tech support, website maintenance, hardware and software maintenance and the other million things u mentioned? I understand non-profit, but if you really want to help serve whatever population it is that u serve, u had better make finding some funding for your organizations technology needs a priority. There are plenty of grants and other options out there. The services you requested volunteers for are done by highly paid individuals that don’t have enough hours in the day to meet the demands on their time. And for good reason, these services rendered by qualified individuals are essential to any sucessful organization. So, again, you need to get your organization’s priorities in order. Just my two cents.

Original AD:

A small not-for-profit organization in NYC is losing our tech director in a few weeks and we are in dire need of tech and web help until we can assess our needs and hire permanent consultants or staff. We are looking for those who can afford to volunteer, but we also have some limited funding for consulting services and/or part-time work (particularly for tech support and IT services).

The staff member who is leaving provides tech support to approx 45 staff, oversees hardware, software, website, e-mail and database maintenance; system security, backups and upgrades and manage systems and web-related vendor accounts. He is also responsible for the periodic updates/redesign of our popular website, assisting staff with database and reporting and advising us with selection and projects done by consultants.

We are looking for people with experience/expertise in Windows OS and PC troubleshooting, networking, security, programming (PHP, MySQL, Apache, Unix administration); web design (HTML, CSS, Javascript) and database administration.

I think you’re absolutely right. Getting someone to something,let alone at lot of things,for nothing in return is FLAT OUT WRONG!!! Internships are opportunties for people whom lack desired skills in a particular field of expertise,the chance to trade off their hard work IN EXCHANGE for TRAINING in said field. People should know their worth. That way,you can never be taken advantage of. Let me say this: Inerns don’t know ANYTHING! So if you see someone whom wants interns with a ton of marketable skills,(PhotoShop,Flash,etc.)shows you they don’t want to pay for these skills.
Don’t reply to these people. They’re looking to take adavantage of you.

The price for a logo should be 600.00 not under 100 or 125.00. What are you people crazy! Do you think it takes only one hour to do this? Do you think it takes a week or two to learn how to do this or someone woke up on day and said ‘Oh I’m gonna do logos’?

This is something that represents your company and says to people who you are and what you do. If it is good like the Nike logo which a student did for 500 and should of made more money on it afterwards. Anyone who accepts 100 to 150 is doing a disservice to other graphic designers by bringing down the market value of our field and those who offer so little for sound talents should be ashamed. I know florist charge little for flowers to impress or convey a message to someone but the flower you want has to bloom in someone’s hand and nurtured by their mind. Besides would you buy a flower that would die in an hour or would you pay more for a flower that bloomed and stayed alive growing more to create other blossoms? This flower would not be cheap. I have received a lot of agreement on this post and I thank you. I am from Texas and you Would get 600 for a logo where as here you would not. Yes, we designers Should get more than 600 for a logo but I think the bottom line should be 600. It takes at least a week to create an effective logo. Not 40 hours but how do you charge time for day dreaming about the logo on the train? In Miami the fine art gallery would charge 5,000.00 for a painting that really was NOT worth the canvas it was painted on. People would buy it upon the belief that it actually was worth that and would brag about how much they paid for it to others. Status symbol. That is what a logo should be. Know of anyone who is serious about hiring let me know.

I need a super cool, original and stunning logo designed for a relatively new website which has caught major global attention. After only eight months Karate Athlete has already sponsored the World Championships in Finland and gotten the support of many of the world’s karate legends and International Olympic Committee recognized organizations. We are also the driving force behind the inclusion of Karate in the Olympics.

We are cool, trendy and growing rapidly!!! We service the athletes and coaches, NOT the organizations!

We are now moving into the merchandising stage and will be producing karate suits (gi’s) as well as sports bags, T shirts, sweatshirts etc etc... The artist whose design is used will get worldwide exposure. An advertising barter is also possible if the artist chooses that over the $200. A Classified is worth $350/yr on our site.

The logo should carry both concepts in it.... “Athlete” and “Karate”... please make them original and avoid the standard kicking dude... It must be simple and original (like the Polo horse)... It will be embroidered on the chest and back of the karate suits about 2” high as well as incorporated in the T shirts etc ...
