Hello, my name is Brian, a graduate from the School of Visual Arts. I am an independent design professional living, working and riding my bike in Brooklyn, NY.
Upon graduation in 04' I was thrusted into the world of freelance work, and quickly learned on my own how to survive as a "business man"--or at least how to fill out a w2, invoice and not get screwed. And, like so many books I've read on the subject (designer-cum-business-man) it seems that everyone had the same stories of finicky clients, dirty tactics, and unsavory deals.
When I first visited Craigslist right out from college, I began to notice that many in the community were very supportive of young practitioners. There was/is response to a lot of the postings (Re:) rich in advice and tips. Many pointing young talent to websites like NoSpec!, and the Graphic Artist Guild, some with angry responses, tips and cheeky posts to the original advert. In 2007 I began to collect them, and a year later I began to post them here. Together they create a wise, often humorous dialog between designers.
If you'd like to add more, just reply to the posts and paste them in, or you could send them to me and I'll be happy to add them in.
*Disclaimer: I am NOT the author of these posts. These are a collection of posts that illustrate designers/photographers and authors responses to unpaid work solicitation/speculative work and the like. These are the words of your community.
